HISTORY OF THE AMES ROOM

Adelbert Ames was an American scientist who has contributed to Physics, physiology, psychology. He also specialised in the philosophy and the physiology of the eye. Adelbert Ames designed the first Ames Room in 1934. The first Ames Room was built in 1935.

In the movie ‘The Lord of the Rings’ the hobbits appear much smaller as opposed to Gandalf for example. This illusion was created by using a so-called ‘forced perspective’. This is the principle that the Ames Room was based on.
